Habitat for La Salle Academy — Community Service in Action
Our volunteers logged over 1,000 hours of their time working on our Habitat for LaSalle Community project in an attempt to help a local family repair their home and build a brighter future for themselves for generations to come. The house is officially finished and we will still continue to work with the family on a number of programs ranging from organization and cooking skills to home maintenance. In early 2010, we will be starting a project on North Gratz Street in Philadelphia, Pa.
La Salle Academy Fundraising — From Our Hearts to Yours
Each year, we hold several fundraisers to raise money for the La Salle Academy in North Philadelphia. At the completion of the fundraisers, the money raised will be given to the school. La Salle Academy opened its doors in September of 2003 to address the needs of underprivileged children. It is an independent school owned by the Board of Trustees established in the traditions of the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Nothing But Nets – Saving Lives Abroad
For the past three years, our company has supported the cause of Nothing but Nets. In 2006, we learned of this cause which was supported by Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated. Since then, we decided to join the cause to help fight Malaria in Africa. For every $10 that is raised, the sponsor buys an insecticide-treated bed net for four people. These nets help to prevent the spread of Malaria from mosquitoes. We hosted events such as Texas Hold ’Em, Bingo, a Survivor Fitness Challenge, a bake sale, a foul shooting contest and much more. Over the past three years, we have raised upwards of $22,000, which has purchased 2,200 bed nets! To learn more, visit www.nothingbutnets.net.
Reading STARS — Shining Results
In conjunction with Greater Philadelphia Cares and the Philadelphia School District, our community participated in a tutoring program called Reading STARS. This is a unique reading program structured so that anyone with a fifth grade reading level can be trained to help a student get up to speed in less than 40 hours. Our partner school was John Jenks Middle School. Volunteers committed one lunch hour a week for the 40-week session. Paired up with a one-on-one mentor, 33 students improved their reading grade level by 2.2 grades over the 40-week program. Student word decoding skills increased by 21.4 points. Philadelphia Cares reports that our students showed the most improvement of any of the schools in the program. Our people received tremendous satisfaction from participating in the program as well. To quote one of the mentors, “I gained the confidence that one person can make a difference in a child’s life.” We kicked off our 2009/2010 program on October 8, 2009.
National Bring Your Child to Work Day
With 150 children in attendance at our home office in Wayne, Pa., this annual event was another great success. The children had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational events with guest speakers while having a great time and learning about the insurance industry. Participants included children in our community, as well as those children active in our service program with La Salle Academy in Philadelphia.
