Reading STARS
This fall, our Community in conjunction with Greater Philadelphia Cares and the Philadelphia School District will be participating in a tutoring program called Reading STARS. Reading STARS is a unique reading program structured so that anyone with a fifth grade reading level can be trained to help a student get up to speed in less than 40 hours. The reading skills of students who complete the program have improved on an average of 2.4 grade levels.
- Only 35% of 5th grade students in Philadelphia public schools are proficient or advanced readers
- If children can't read well, chances for later school success are greatly diminished including a greater likelihood of delinquent behavior and dropping out of school.
- 85% of the children who appear in juvenile court lack reading skills
Volunteers commit one lunch hour a week for the 40 week session. Training and all materials will be provided by Reading STARS. To date we have 30 people who will trained as tutors and 8 people who will be their back-ups.
Vanguard Community Based Vocational Training Program
We successfully completed our first year of participation with this program. Six students from the Vanguard School worked at our Community every Tuesday and Wednesday through out the school year. Each student was assigned a coach and an assistant coach to guide them during their time here. Both the students and coaches felt that the program was very valuable. United States Liability was awarded the "Employer of the Year" award from the Vanguard School.
We are looking forward to expanding the program to include seven students in the fall of 2007.
Events
We are proud to say that a Nothing But Nets Challenge was sponsored by our Community in 2007. This 9-week challenge helped to raise money for bed nets to prevent malaria from insect bites in Africa. Through a workout challenge, foul shooting contest, silent auction and casino week, we raised over $22,000 for this worthwhile cause! These funds are matched by Bill and Melinda Gates, bringing the total funds raised by our effort to $44,000. We have helped to save approximately 17,000 lives.
