USLI is committed to keeping its customers up to date on recent Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund A devastating earthquake of 8.9 magnitude and tsunami struck the north coast of Japan causing major devastation to its people on Friday, March 11, 2011. In an effort to assist with aid for relief and emergency services, USLI collected funds and donated them to www.globalgiving.org up. GlobalGiving is working with International Medical Corp., Save the Children and several other organizations on the ground to ensure immediate and impactful relief to those that need it. USLI matched donations dollar for dollar.
La Salle Mentoring Program We formed a mentoring partnership with the 15 5th grade students at La Salle Academy. Each child is paired with two mentors from USLI and visits our company weekly. The program is divided into two, 10-week sessions. Part of the program's goal is to build relationships through exercise, so the children and mentors use our fitness center, basketball court or can walk outside. The other part of the goal is for the mentors to spend the remaining time doing something that they know the child is interested in learning more about. At the end of each visit, we provide the children with a healthy snack before they head home. The children also participate in our Children's Holiday Party and Bring Your Child to Work Day. Our hope is to form relationships with these children that will last many years while promoting healthy living.
La Salle Academy Habitat Projects Our Habitat for La Salle initiatives began in the spring of 2009. Since then, community members and their families have logged over 2,000 hours of their own time helping the families of the La Salle students repair their homes. Our goal is to eventually work on 30 homes.
La Salle Academy Healthy Lifestyle Program We will be working with the students and families at La Salle Academy on a Healthy Life Styles Program. One of our initiatives include: Dinner and Learns, where we will prepare and serve a healthy meal and teach the families how to prepare the meal we served, we will also present a healthy eating topic. We will teach the students about the Food Pyramid and the importance of adding fruits and vegetables to their diet. To help promote physical activity we are creating on-line exercise videos so the students can watch one of our fitness instructors perform various exercises including yoga. We will also be bringing group of students out to our facility to teach them the fundamentals of baseball, football and basketball. E-mail Penny Taney at ptaney@usli.com for more information. La Salle Academy Fundraising — From Our Hearts to Yours Each year, we hold several fundraisers to raise money for the La Salle Academy in North Philadelphia. At the completion of the fundraisers, the money raised will be given to the school. La Salle Academy opened its doors in September of 2003 to address the needs of underprivileged children. It is an independent school owned by the Board of Trustees established in the traditions of the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Saint Joseph. E-mail Penny Taney at ptaney@usli.com for more information. Nothing But Nets – Saving Lives Abroad In 2006, we learned of this cause which was supported by Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated. Since then, we decided to join the cause to help fight Malaria in Africa. For every $10 that is raised, the sponsor buys an insecticide-treated bed net for four people. These nets help to prevent the spread of Malaria from mosquitoes. We hosted events such as Texas Hold ’Em, Bingo, a Survivor Fitness Challenge, a bake sale, a foul shooting contest and much more. Over the years, we have raised upwards of $22,000, which has purchased 2,200 bed nets! To learn more, visit www.nothingbutnets.net. Reading STARS — Shining Results In conjunction with Greater Philadelphia Cares and the Philadelphia School District, our community participates in a tutoring program called Reading STARS. This is a unique reading program structured so that anyone with a fifth grade reading level can be trained to help a student get up to speed in less than 40 hours. Our partner school was John Jenks Middle School. Volunteers commit one lunch hour a week for the 40-week session. Paired up with a one-on-one mentor, 33 students improved their reading grade level by 2.2 grades over the 40-week program. Student word decoding skills increased by 21.4 points. Philadelphia Cares reports that our students showed the most improvement of any of the schools in the program. Our people received tremendous satisfaction from participating in the program as well. To quote one of the mentors, “I gained the confidence that one person can make a difference in a child’s life.” National Bring Your Child to Work Day This annual event at our Wayne, Pa. office is a success. The children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational events with guest speakers while having a great time and learning about the insurance industry. Participants include children in our community, as well as those children active in our service program with La Salle Academy in Philadelphia and our Reading Stars students.
